1989-2000 - 2001 - Story

I bought this car used in July of 2000 with 207,000 miles on it for $300. It looked like a used car, and ran great, but squealed like a stuck pig when the clutch pedal was depressed. Also under these conditions the transmission was not disengaged from the engine... this was cured by about $500 worth of parts and 13 hours rolling around on a cement floor with my eminently skilled associate Nate. I have been plodding through the list of "needs" I have compiled, ranging from the sublime (stop windshield leak) to the ridiculous (leather shift knob). The car has been serving me well, as I get used to it and it to me.

For a while in addition to my 1982 Coupe I had a beater 85 Coupe GT, then I picked up an old 1984 4000 Quattro with the idea of fixing it up as a cooler beater. The trouble is, making my Coupe as nice and reliable as possible doesn't go well with keeping some old car barely working, and cheaply, as a back up. And who wants to drive a backup beater, ever, really? So when the chance to grab this 90 Quattro for small money came along, I jumped at it. A cursory examination indicated that it would be worth treating as well as my Coupe, slowly repairing, restoring, and improving it until it is a really nice car. Actually, it's pretty nice already, but it does have some sorting out to be done!

Fixed:
Clutch
sunroof
ABS
instrument cluster and switch lights
removed antique cell phone
drivers door lock
drivers rear door handle
shift rod, ball housing, "short shift" modification
fresh air fan resistor
radio hookup to ignition circuit
identified and fixed windsheild leak
leather shift knob
engine compartment light (it needs the lights to be on!)
humming fuel pump
cupholder
made drivers seat go further forward
Eurolights!
Strut tower stress bar
H & R lowering springs & Bilsteins (used)
replace left rear brake caliper (used)

To Fix:
little dings and dents
a real antenna?
front control arm bushings (etc.)
rear tie rods
fuel injectors (and seals and seats)
15" wheels and 205/50's (all used of course!)
